Checkerboards

When shooting checkerboard images, be sure to allow the array to fill the entire image. The corners of the image are the most informative about the image, so when there are no dots there, the calibration will necessarily be less accurate. Only the single current frame will be processed.

Tip : Despite industry practice, there are so many more things that can and do go wrong with checkerboard patterns than with dots.

NOTE : The checkerboard must have a single repeating pattern. If the checkerboard you have contains multiple resolutions, you may be able to generate trackers, then delete unnecessary ones. If it has been glued from multiple pieces, you may be able to use the Lines method above, and create lines that do not cross the seams manually, but this should be avoided!

BAD:

(requires manual rework, either to add and remove trackers or to set up line straightening)

BAD:

(pinned together from two pieces, requires manual

handling)

BAD:

(Out of focus, asymmetry results in bridging effect between blocks)

Note that the grid should fill the camera image! The corners of the image are the most informative part of the image, so when there are no dots there, the calibration will necessarily be less accurate.
