If your planar tracker goes off course and wanders away, or switches to a somewhat different version of the search pattern, here's a checklist to examine.

- shot prediction mode—should it be set to hand-held, ie is it a bouncy shot?

- search size— (very common!) if the search size is too small, sporadic bumps in the shot will often cause loss of track, or a pattern that inexplicably changes to a somewhat different version.

- obscuring objects—if other significant objects come between the camera and the tracked object, they should be masked out, see Masking.

- poor contrast—if the pattern has little monochrome contrast, you may need to switch to specific channel or full RGB processing, see Channel Selection.

- pattern has only fine detail—if the search pattern is mainly fine lines such as text, you may need to switch to High Detail mode.

- rotation—if the shot suddenly "goes dutch" and spins, or an object being tracked spins rapidly around the axis facing it, increase the rotation rate search parameter.

- zoom shots—the default scaling change parameter is intended for slow changes. If there is a crash zoom, increase the scaling rate search parameter.

If the tracker mini-view shows an interior that slowly shifts in some direction over the length of the shot

- the tracked surface isn't flat (a recessed door, say). The interior may need to be masked out (see Masking)

- the field of view defined by the main frame corners isn't correct. The corner locations should be adjusted, possibly by adjusting the Own FOV spinner.
